Giving Tuesday to Benefit The Pallet Foundation Following Black Friday, Small Business Saturday and Cyber Monday, Giving Tuesday was established in 2012 as a global day of giving fueled by the power of social media and collaboration. On November 27th, NWPCA took to social media to take advantage of the campaign to raise funds for The Pallet Foundation. Nearly $3,000 was raised in one day by members and non-members as part of the campaign. Facebook will advise later this year of the total matched donations to The Pallet Foundation. Many thanks to those who participated. On the Road Mark Barford, Senior Director, Business Partnerships, attended the National Hardwood Lumber Association meeting in Toronto, Canada, October 2-4. Key issues discussed at the meeting included supply and labor, which mirror the challenges that the wood packaging industry faces. Annette Ferri, Vice President of Communications, attended "Be Bold For Change: How Leading with Love, Works; A Winning Culture & Employee Retention Begins with YOU," September 26-27, in Glendale, Colorado. The workshop was hosted by NWPCA member James Ruder and focused on labor retention, which is part of the NWPCA Strategic Plan. Brent McClendon, NWPCA President and CEO, presented at the 100th Annual Railway Tie Association Symposium and Technical Conference October 23-24, in Bonita Springs, Florida, and highlighted the interconnectedness of the railway tie industry and the wood packaging industry. Brent represented the wood packaging industry at the American Lumber Standards Committee meeting November 9th in San Diego to ensure our industry's voice is heard. Brad Gething, PhD, Director of Science and Technology Integration, and Patrick Atagi, Vice President Advocacy and External Affairs, participated in the North American Plant Protection Organization's annual meeting October 22-25, in Tucson, Arizona. The meeting was attended by national and international industry leaders covering plant pest issues and plant health standards. By having a seat at the table, as well as the networking opportunities, NWPCA is strengthening partnerships with other representatives who share common concerns involving our industry. Anne Lewis, Communications Manager, attended the Continental Forest Dialogue on Non-Native Forest Insects & Diseases November 6-7 in Irvine, California. The dialogue is an initiative of The Nature Conservancy, one of NWPCA's environmental partners invited to participate in the Healthy Forests, Healthy Markets video produced earlier in 2018. The active participation of NWPCA is key to building and maintaining positive working relationships to advance the mission and goals of the Association. Patrick Atagi also attended the Invasive Insects Grand Challenge meeting addressing the North American and Pacific Rim Invasive Insect and Arthropod Species Challenge in addition to the Entomological Society of America's Annual Meeting November 8-14 in Vancouver, Canada. Attendance was near 4,000, allowing Patrick to meet and network, while representing the industry. He also participated in the State Government Affairs Council Leaders' Policy Conference, November 17-20 in Scottsdale, Arizona. This conference is the annual meeting of the states' legislative leadership and state government affairs professionals from America's leading businesses, associations and service providers.
