are repaired. However, the cost to remediate may outweigh
procuring new ones. If they cannot be remediated, they will be
sent to disposal.
As an example, two of the largest Distribution Centers in
DLA Distribution send the disposed pallets to the recycling
center where the pallets are ground up. Through a Qualified
Recycling Program, we have agreements with vendors to purchase
pallets, wood scraps and metals. The vendors ground pallets,
chip them and reuse them for mulch. This process reduces
waste disposal; reduces soil erosion; helps in the conservation
of valuable natural resources; and helps to provide a cleaner
environment. This practice contributes to our pollution
prevention efforts by diverting these items from landfills.
Wood pallets are procured through the standard supply
channels, based on the needs of the distribution centers.
