34 PalletCentral • November-December 2018 palletcentral.com are repaired. However, the cost to remediate may outweigh procuring new ones. If they cannot be remediated, they will be sent to disposal. As an example, two of the largest Distribution Centers in DLA Distribution send the disposed pallets to the recycling center where the pallets are ground up. Through a Qualified Recycling Program, we have agreements with vendors to purchase pallets, wood scraps and metals. The vendors ground pallets, chip them and reuse them for mulch. This process reduces waste disposal; reduces soil erosion; helps in the conservation of valuable natural resources; and helps to provide a cleaner environment. This practice contributes to our pollution prevention efforts by diverting these items from landfills. Wood pallets are procured through the standard supply channels, based on the needs of the distribution centers. More information regarding DLA's palletization policy can be found at www.dla.mil. PC MARKETS "Wooden pallets go through a series of stringent tests for durability to withstand harsh environments that our service members may encounter. Wing type pallets allows the Navy to resupply ships at sea. The four-way entry pallet accommodates Material Handling Equipment (MHE) for many types to include MHE utilized by NATO forces. The first function of pallets is essentially to protect the goods that are shipped." ~DLA Distribution Representative Anne Lewis is the NWPCA Communications Manager.
