In all of these industrial sectors, workers tend to develop chronic injuries or other work-related pain, and may be initially given opiates for treatment. But as time passes, the workers develop a tolerance that can lead to seeking drugs illegally or on the dark web to supplement their medical supply (or after it's cut off when workers' comp claims resolve). One union, representing elevator constructors, reported that it lost five members to overdose in just an 11-month period. e CDC found that, in 2020, more than 162 overdose deaths occurred on the job in construction alone—and when considering an overall death rate in construction of approximately 10 out of every 100,000 workers that year, the sad truth is that workers were roughly 16 times more likely to die of an overdose on the job as they were from a work-related injury such as a fall or electrocution. e second highest overdose number was 118 deaths in the food service industry (carrying heav y trays and working in kitchens can take a toll on workers' bodies, too)! Overall, 92,000 people in the US died from an overdose in 2020 (on and off the job)—and 75% of those were due to opiates. If you think you or someone nearby has overdosed, call 911 right away. Administer Naloxone if you have it nearby. Start CPR if someone is not breathing or you cannot feel a pulse, and stay with them until the ambulance arrives. Common signs of opioid overdoses include the follow ing: • Slow or irreg ular breathing • Falling unconscious • Pinpoint pupils • Bluish sk in, especially in the lips and f inger tips • Limp body • Pale face • Tiny pupils • Vomiting or g urgling noises • Being unable to speak or respond to questions • Slow or irreg ular hear t rate Pallet C e nt ral • No vem be r-D e cem be r 2 0 24 37 HOW MUCH IS YOUR BUSINESS WORTH?
