Pallet C e nt ral • May -Ju ne 2 0 25 31 I s it really mold? For many companies, discovering black discoloration on your wood packaging products can be troublesome. At first glance, it might look like mold fungi but it might be something else entirely. e brochure "Identifying Wood Discolorations" is an educational handout designed to help customers and supply chain partners distinguish between mold and natural wood discolorations on pallets and containers—a critical difference that can save time, money, and unnecessary product rejection. Developed by the NWPCA Industry Marketing Committee in April 2019, this handout continues to be the most-accessed resource among NWPCA members, underscoring the importance of clear, visual communication in addressing common concerns about wood staining. Wood, as a natural material, comes with its own set of unique characteristics—color variations, streaks, and spots that are often mistaken for mold. However, many of these marks are simply cosmetic and have no impact on the performance or structural integrity of the pallet. Misidentifying them can lead to confusion with customers, added costs for replacements, and unnecessary worry. e handout provides side-by-side comparisons of typical wood stains, including: • Iron Stain (Tannic Acid Reaction): Dark marks caused by a chemical reaction between tannins in wood and metal contact. • Brown or Zebra Stains: Common in species like western hemlock after kiln drying or contact with minerals. • Sun E xposure: UV-induced weathering that darkens the wood 's surface. • Blue Stain: A bluish or gray fungal stain that does not compromise strength or safety. • Enzy matic and Mineral Discoloration: Naturally occurring changes in color from the tree's growth or soil conditions. By educating customers on these natural discolorations versus mold, pallet providers can reduce costly misunderstandings and reinforce confidence in wood packaging. e printable, high-resolution brochure is perfect for customer-facing teams and is available for download, making it easy to include in shipments, display in offices, or use in training.
