36 Pallet C e nt ral • No vem be r-D e cem be r 2 0 26 CDS UPDATE BY MICHELLE SULLIVAN, SENIOR DIRECTOR OF MARKETING Building A Beer Box: Introducing The Crate Design System™ W ooden crates protect some of the world's most valuable and hardest-to-move goods, including export shipments, industrial machinery, and heavy equipment, yet crate designers have performed complex engineering using tools not designed for the job. Much of the research behind crate design dates back to 1968. Since then, designers have relied on experience, rules of thumb, spreadsheets, and general drafting software to fill the gaps. In September, Woodpack Global launched Crate Design System™ (CDS), a software tool made specifically for designing wooden crates and industrial wood packaging. is is the first version, and the team is open about its early stage. Still, for an industry that has lacked dedicated tools, this is a significant change. A Long-Overdue Tool "e wooden crate design space has been underserved for a long time," said Kristen DeLack, PE, PDS Principal Engineer & Strategic Business Advisor at Woodpack Global. "is first release of CDS is just the beginning, and it was shaped by feedback from professionals who work with these structures every day." Real-world input is important. Crate designers have plenty of expertise, often built over long careers working with different lumber grades, fastening patterns, and load conditions. What they have not had is software that captures this knowledge and helps them use it consistently. CDS was created to support designers and turn their experience into reliable, well-documented designs. Built On A Proven Foundation CDS builds on the foundation of Woodpack Global's Pallet Design System™ (PDS), the association's trusted pallet design software. It adapts key methods for fastener behavior, wood properties, and structural performance to fit crate design. at lineage gives CDS a head start. e engineering principles that govern how a pallet carries a load share a great deal with the principles that govern how a crate protects its contents. By building on work the industry already trusts, the CDS team
