4 0 PalletCentral • November-December 2014 ore than 5,000 people attended PalletFest, a two-day event held in Denver, Colorado, October 11-12. The new, unique and first major pallet upcycle festival was the brainchild of Kenny Fischer, Founder, Upcycle Events. He chose prime real estate in a high-profile venue, directly in front of the Denver Performing Arts Complex. James Ruder at L&R Pallet provided five truckloads of pallets for the event, and helped find partners for critical support including forklifts. James was on-hand for both days of the fun-filled festival. Brent McClendon, NWPCA President and CEO, flew in for the event, as did several NWPCA members, including Amy Angellotti from Rose Pallet, and Kaitlin Manning from The Nelson Company. Attendees explored a giant pallet maze, shopped from the many upcycle art vendors, saw professional parkour athletes maneuver on an obstacle course made from pallets, and enjoyed live musical entertainment throughout the day; not to mention, sip on specialty beers from local breweries. Three things were quite notable from our perspective. First – Seeing five full truckloads of pallets, celebrated front- and-center in downtown Denver, was truly amazing. People loved the event and felt proud for what they were doing for sustainability through upcycling. Attendees came with a perhaps biased perspective of the pallet industry and recycling, and left with a much better understanding for the critical role the recycling industry has played for the environment for 40+ years. As one participant acknowledged, "Wow, you guys were recycling before recycling was cool." In addition, NWPCA was able to share a broader "wood is good" message explaining that U.S. forests are now double their 1953 size. "I must say, it is refreshing being around people as they celebrate wood. They came open to discuss and learn about the PalletFest!
