We celebrate anniversaries all the time. These are important markers in time: birthdays, reunions, past championships and weddings, to name a few. This topic is probably on my mind because I just celebrated my 24th wedding anniversary and my 2nd work anniversary with NWPCA. When you stop and really think about it, we're not just celebrating the occurrence, we are also looking forward to what's ahead of us. As we reach a certain wedding anniversary, it doesn't mean we stop investing in the relationship. Businesses, like relationships, need constant investments of time and energy to continue to prosper and flourish. Two items recently brought this to my attention: the 75th anniversary of the "lift truck" and the 30th anniversary of NWPCA's Pallet Design System™ (PDS). George Raymond Senior and his company, which was eventually bought by Toyota Industries, patented the hand truck that is still used around the world today to move pallets. At a recent party celebrating the 75th anniversary of the "lift truck" patent, cupcakes were served from the platform of a more modern-looking version of the first trucks. They weren't just celebrating the past, they were celebrating the business plan that led to their growth which now enables them to continue to sell these "lift trucks" all over the world. In a similar vein, NWPCA recently celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Pallet Design System™. As we started to look back we realized a lot has happened these past 30 years when it comes to technology. The same year we rolled out PDS, the year was 1984 and Steve Jobs introduced the Macintosh computer. Bill Gates arrived late to the party, introducing the Microsoft Office Suite in 1988. As with each new iteration of "Mac" as hardware, every new version of PDS software incorporates new ideas and technology, including the latest data, engineering and advances stemming from National Wooden Pallet & Container Association's (NWPCA) continuous program of research and development. Starting from a DOS-based software system that evaluated stringer pallets, PDS now analyzes both stringer and block pallets, and utilizes a 3-D user interface for enhanced functionality. While we are proud of these achievements, NWPCA is making aggressive expansion plans for the future. We are currently engaged in R&D endeavors to significantly expand the capabilities of PDS in the realm of unit load design. Plans are underway to double our PDS staff by hiring another software engineer and structural engineer. Anniversaries are a time to celebrate the past. They are also a time to stay focused on the future. Marriages don't sustain themselves without constant investment and effort; neither do business models. Happy Anniversary PDS version 5.1 with LoadSync © , well done. Here's to another 30!
