What's the value of a net work? More than 500 business leaders converged in Tucson for the NWPCA Annual Leadership Conference (ALC) for a variety of reasons. Without any doubt, networking topped the list. Our focus these past two years has been to change the ALC format to deliver stronger business connections, and make the event more open and available to all of our members, large and small. We shortened the event, tightened up the schedule, and moved to a new Wednesday-Friday structure with enhanced, yet fun, business networking. Why? Because networking improves business operations. You share with each other best practices on human resources, safety practices, transportation and logistics. You form business connections that expand your opportunities across the U.S. As our membership grows more connected, the industry gets stronger. Now we're working harder to create year-round networking opportunities. NWPCA's website is a powerful new way to reach out and share information. After a few clicks, you can easily search for pallet manufacturers, recyclers or industry suppliers, or find any individual member. You can also learn best practices and business processes, gain access to document libraries, standards, and business articles, and store these documents in your own portal. It's hard to know the immediate value of a meeting, whether at our ALC or for NWPCA when we are in a meeting on Capitol Hill. What is clear though, is networking works, and NWPCA is also investing in expanding the association's own business network. Patrick Atagi, our vice president of advocacy and external affairs, has had more than 60 meetings with other trade associations, companies, key legislators and regulatory officials. Building a network is a wise investment. Recently, NWPCA received an emergency call from a major distilled spirits shipper. Their entire shipment was held at a port by authorities because of non-compliant wood packaging. Staff helped them resolve the situation, and also directed them to our website where they located an NWPCA member that provides ISPM-15 compliant packaging. How did they learn about NWPCA? One of Patrick's business cards, provided during a meeting with other associations, made its way to one of its members. Now, other trade groups refer to us as "the pallet people," and the single resource for answers on any wood packaging issue. Networking raises your profile. Networking equates to opportunity. NWPCA continues to expand our networking options for you because we know the benefit it can bring to your company. I challenge you and your team to take full advantage and explore our online and in-person opportunities. I know you'll be pleasantly surprised with the results.
