30 PalletCentral • September-October 2015 palletcentral.com he American Lumber Standard Committee (ALSC) in 2014 approved changes to its enforcement regulations for solid wood packaging material (WPM) that were advanced by a joint effort of the NWPCA, APHIS and ALSC. The changes established a tolerance policy for repaired wood packaging material mark obliteration. In essence, those involved in the effort recognized that despite a company's best efforts an inspector might find a random mark or two that was not obliterated, and as a result the new tolerance policy for out of compliance was set at "more than 5%". Since its implementation in 2014 it has been favorably received by the industry. The change came after a workshop with USDA-APHIS, ALSC staff, NWPCA staff and several industry volunteers and helped to open the door for expanded discussions on other questions or challenges faced by program participants. Brent McClendon is a member of the ALSC, and serves on the ALSC Enforcement Subcommittee. NWPCA and ALSC continue to work on the various concerns or scenarios communicated to NWPCA staff by its members. The following questions were received by NWPCA from our membership, which led to conversations for clarification with ALSC.
