Ebb and Flow
Few markets are as sensitive to raw material costs as the
pallet sector. For now, it appears hardwood costs are becoming
more favorable relative to softwood; this could create more
opportunities for hardwood in the near-term. However, run
ups in hardwood prices or slippage in softwood prices could
easily cause market conditions to revert back to those seen in
2015-2016. As one pallet industry veteran said, "Hardwood use
will continue to ebb and flow based on costs compared to
softwoods."
