The NWPCA has a long history of activity in the safety arena and we continue to invest time and resources in this critical issue. We have an OSHA safety consultant at all our meetings, have developed a variety of safety resources for our members through the years, and are currently working with fire safety experts around outdoor pallet storage and fire prevention. We have spent a lot of effort building relationships with other safety-focused associations, like the Industrial Truck Association. So why did we dedicate 2017 as our "Year of Safety"? It's not just because of the safety initiatives currently underway and new programs being launched; it's because our unified and collective efforts as an industry to raise best practices will help define the kind of industry we have in the future. We are being watched. Forestry groups are looking at ISPM15, wood pallets and forest health. OSHA officials are looking at our industry as an area of emphasis. Fire code officials are looking at our industry to see if we'll meet our commitment to broaden the application of best practices around fire prevention, fire mitigation, and fire safety for first responders. There is tremendous opportunity for NWPCA to take a leadership role in expanding best practices. On Thursday, August 3rd, NWPCA will host a regional safety meeting in Chicago. I invite and encourage you to attend and be part of the discussion. We're creating a fire code compliance manual to be released this year. The manual will be widely distributed to NWPCA members and colleagues in the wood packaging industry, but also to fire officials in local communities as we continue to collaborate and build long-term relationships with strategic entities regarding the critical issue of fire safety. NWPCA had a Safety Alliance with OSHA centered around pallet dismantler safety, and we continue to seek a renewal and expansion. Regarding ISPM15, we have a natural leadership role in facilitating conversation, and seeking solutions for expanding ISPM15 compliance globally, while working closely with key stakeholders to assure seamless and uninterrupted trade through the expanded use of environmentally friendly and sustainable wood packaging. We have excellent products. The Pallet Design System™ epitomizes our focus on safety. The engineering in PDS enables users to quickly and accurately determine pallet performance under the intended conditions of use, reducing concerns over human health and safety, while reducing or eliminating product damage which can result from inadequate pallet strength, stiffness, or durability. Our website, PalletCentral.com, is increasingly becoming the hub for industry knowledge and technology transfer. Expansion of best practices, whether in pallet design, or in your site security and plant management, is increasingly important as we near 2020. Government agencies and regulators, especially in a pro-business administration, are looking for us to take the lead. We're up for the challenge and excited about the days, months and years ahead.
