Regarding the Maintenance of Air-Moving Devices; Fans and blowers shall be checked periodically for excessive heat and vibration. Maintenance, other than the lubrication of external bearings, shall not be performed on fans or blowers while the unit is operating. Bearings shall be lubricated and checked periodically for excessive wear. If the material has a tendency to adhere to the rotor or housing, the components shall be cleaned periodically to maintain good balance and minimize the probability of ignition. The surfaces of fan housings and other interior components shall be maintained free of rust. Aluminum paint shall not be used on interior steel surfaces [NFPA 654 §12.2.1]. Regarding the Maintenance of Air–Material Separators; Air–material separation devices that are equipped with a means to dislodge particulates from the surface of filter media shall be inspected periodically as recommended in the manufacturers' instructions for signs of wear, friction, or clogging. These devices shall be adjusted and lubricated as recommended in the manufacturers' instructions. Air–material separators that recycle air (i.e., cyclones and filter media dust collectors) shall be maintained to comply with 7.13.1.6.3 of NFPA 654. Filter media shall not be replaced with an alternative type unless a thorough evaluation of the fire hazards has been performed, documented, and reviewed by management [NFPA 654 §12.2.3]. A dust hazard analysis in accordance with NFPA 654 may be necessary to determine the required fire preventative actions taken by the facility. A.2.3.4 Fire Access Route Qualifications Both the IFC and NFPA 1 contain requirements regarding fire department access roads or routes. These typically address issues such as width, surface, clearance height, turning radius, slope or grade, and signage. However, many jurisdictions modify these provisions based upon the apparatus used by that jurisdiction. Rather than cite provisions here, it is best that one obtain the requirements for the local fire official. A.2.3.5 Other Considerations Sprinkler Protection for Indoor Wood Pallet Storage. [NFPA 13 §12.12] Wood pallets stored indoors are required to be protected with a system in accordance with NFPA 13, unless approval has been granted otherwise. Wood pallets stored indoors shall be protected with a system in accordance with NFPA 13 and one of the following: (1) Control mode density/area sprinkler protection as specified in Table 12.12.1.2(a). (2) CMSA sprinkler protection in accordance with Table 12.12.1.2(b). (3) ESFR sprinkler protection in accordance with Table 12.12.1.2(c). (4) Control mode density/area sprinkler protection in accordance with the OH2 curve of Figure 13.2.1 existing with a hose stream demand of at least 250 gpm (946 L/min) for a duration of at least 60 minutes when pallets are stored no higher than 6 ft (1.8 m) and each pile of no more than four stacks shall be separated from other pallet piles by at
