The next morning, he presented his findings to his chain of command. Abrashoff agreed with the sailor's discovery, and submitted it to the think tank of physicists and scientists. Their review supported the sailor's discovery as well, and new guidelines were issued. Abrashoff also shared the importance and value of having a mentor. He asked the audience, "Think about a role model you had, then ask yourself, why is this person a role model for you? Then ask yourself, are you emulating them?" He referenced his role model, William Perry, former Secretary of Defense. Perry told Abrashoff that a secret to his success was to create a team to help get the mission accomplished. William Perry led with a sense of humility; it was excellence without arrogance. With success, you'll also experience failure. "When you fail, look inward," Abrashoff continued. "Ask yourself, did I articulate the goals? Did I provide adequate time and resources? Did I provide training?" When people do great work, recognize and reward them. There are ways to validate workers without giving them more money. Sometimes, a pat on the back is all people want. At the end of the day, Abrashoff said he was there to work for his crew. He showed up to work every day to support the people who worked for him. When problems arose, crew members would approach him. He'd respond with, "What would you do? It's your ship. You tell me."
