On August 21-23, NWPCA teams up with Virginia Tech to present a short course on pallet design and performance in Blacksburg, Virginia. Dr. Laszlo Horvath, director of the Center for Packaging and Unit Load Design at VT, joins NWPCA's Dr. Brad Gething, to present a course on how pallet design and selection affects materials handling costs; the fundamentals of stringer class pallet design and performance, and much more, using the Pallet Design System™ (PDS). Registration is accessible at the events calendar from PalletCentral.com On the Road NWPCA President/CEO Brent McClendon, currently serves on the board of The National Association of Manufacturers' Council of Manufacturing Associations (CMA) and will attend their Board Meeting and Summer Leadership Conference, August 8-10, in Chicago. Topics of discussion include industry trends, policies impacting manufacturing, and ways to address the manufacturing workforce. Mark Barford, senior director of business partnerships, presented at the annual meeting of the New England Lumbermen's Association on June 13 in New Hampshire. He spoke on consistent demand for industrial lumber. He then attended a meeting of the Penn- York Lumbermen's Club to tour a new high production hardwood mill and discuss industrial lumber availability with its members. Brad Gething, PhD, director of science and technology integration, traveled to St. Simons Island, Georgia June 6-8, to speak at the Timber Products Inspection Board of Advisers meeting and gave an update on the current issues of the wooden pallet industry, as well as important ongoing projects of NWPCA. Patrick Atagi, vice president of advocacy and external affairs, headed to Chicago from June 25-27 for the UnitedFreshTEC Expo. NWPCA is a member of UnitedFresh, the organization that represents the fresh fruit and vegetable industry; growers, packers, shippers, and grocery stores. NWPCA represents the wood packaging industry on UnitedFresh's Supply Chain Logistics Committee and Government Affairs Committee. Patrick joined other forestry association executives at the National Council of Forestry Association Executives (NCFAE) July 16-20 in Portland, Maine at the NCFAE annual meeting to network and discuss priority issues of the NWPCA, with a broad spectrum of forestry-based organizations. He then heads to the National Conference of State Legislatures annual meeting and the State Government Affairs Council (SGAC) from July 30-August 3, and to the annual meeting of the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) August 8-9.
