palletcentral.com PalletCentral • September-October 2019 33 As noted earlier, hardwood sawmill operators are taking steps to survive today's highly challenging market conditions. However, many are in financial distress and are approaching a decision point: whether to continue operating at a loss or to shut down, either temporarily or permanently. The last time the hardwood sawmill industry faced similar circumstances – during the Great Recession – Eastern U.S. hardwood production declined more than 40% in three years (2006 through 2009). Unless the situation soon changes for the better, further contraction in hardwood production is almost certain. Supplies of hardwood pallet cants and lumber are now meeting or exceeding demand in much of the Eastern U.S. However, availability will likely tighten back up soon. Wooden pallet and container manufacturers should consider this probability in weighing purchasing decisions in the months ahead.
