Lessons after the storm: One of the biggest challenges that our business group has had to face is adapting to the abrupt changes in the supply chain over the past 18 months. ese disruptions created the perfect storm, our group found itself in a dilemma: continue to depend on foreign [lumber] suppliers, or take a closer look at the limited supply of national wood in the hope of being able to develop and modernize it to balance our supply chain in the medium-term. e challenge has not been easy. With the exception of a few principled producers, the development of the Mexican forest industry has not advanced since the late 1980s due to multiple factors, such as the complicated land tenure [system in Mexico], the presence of organized crime, mismanagement, and the general disinterest of landowners to adapt to the new market demands that arose after the signing of NAF TA. While the free trade agreement resulted in a lack of investment and the abandonment of the forestry sector for many years, it spearheaded the development of many regions of our country. Both packaging and pallet entrepreneurs in Mexico, as well as forest product producers, must begin to look at the national forest industry not as spoils subject to appropriation, but as the new foundation and support base of our industry, as the ability to secure supplies from abroad remains uncertain.
