NWPCA's E x ecutive Committee challenged me to ar ticulate a vision for 2021. What programs and projects will be our focus? How will we get there? What impact will it make for our industry? Strategic Plan Alignment & Volunteer Activism: A five-year plan starts with a strategic overlook, and NWPCA's current plan provides an outstanding structure for the review; it includes the following statement: By 2021, the benefits of wood packaging are understood and wood packaging is utilized as the solution of choice for securing and transporting the unit-load globally… NWPCA is recognized as the "go to" resource…. a unifying voice for the global wood packaging industry. We know that active volunteer support is critical in achieving the vision and mission that is articulated in the strategic plan, and you'll see more outreach to communicate our strategy to members and obtain your involvement. Collaboration, Outreach & Advocacy: We'll seek to expand our relationships with universities, other domestic and international associations, government agencies, standards bodies, Congressional offices, and with the media. For 2016, this means a DC Congressional Fly-In in collaboration with the National Association of Manufacturers, and more NWPCA-led Congressional Plant Tours. By 2021, we'll have doubled our advocacy and regulatory affairs team. Membership, Events & PDS: NWPCA needs a strong and growing membership base with a financial platform to create outcomes to improve member businesses and to defeat any initiative that could negatively impact this industry. Membership now stands at 656, up 5% for the year, and at our highest point in ten years. PDS has also seen strong growth with a 6% increase this year in number of leases, and attendance at NWPCA events has doubled since 2012. The NWPCA 2016 ALC is already on pace to shatter previous attendance records, and a west coast plant tour will continue the momentum this fall. By 2021, we expect to have 750 members active in the association, significant international expansion of PDS, and added growth in meeting attendance. Staffing & Operations: Morale is high, and outstanding teamwork is the standard from our strong, competent, driven and unified staff. By 2021, we will have added six additional professionals to NWPCA's team to advance PDS, advocacy, industry marketing, and expand your networking opportunities. In 2021, you can look back at our strategic plan to measure success: NWPCA's global membership is extremely satisfied with the opportunities provided by the association for networking, business development, education, and finding solutions. I've found that any time you sit down and develop a five-year plan it turns out to be a productive exercise. Many of us have these plans, or had them in the past. For the effort to be truly profound though, you have to challenge yourself, your perceptions and your biases. I encourage you to undertake this effort early in 2016, and I welcome your thoughts on what 2021 looks like to you. I also hope you'll read our strategic plan at PalletCentral.com (http://bit.ly/1mjpkAX) and then challenge us and yourself on a five-year plan that raises the profile and makes a lasting impact for this great industry.
