20 PalletCentral • May-June 2018 palletcentral.com Planned efforts for the NORA Manufacturing Council through 2026 include: • Identifying interventions and conducting research to reduce traumatic injuries and fatalities in the manufacturing sector • Reducing chronic diseases such as respiratory diseases, occupational cancer, cardiovascular disease, neurologic diseases and adverse reproductive outcomes • Contributing to the reduction of occupational musculoskeletal disorders in manufacturing • Contributing to the reduction of occupational hearing loss in manufacturing • Improvement in surveillance of work-related hazards, exposures and illnesses in the manufacturing industry • Examination of emerging risks from new technologies (e.g., use of nanomaterials in semi-conductors and other manufacturing activities) and exploration of ways in which new technologies can advance occupational safety and health in manufacturing • Improvement of occupational safety and health for workers in non-traditional employment arrangements • Advancing capacity-building and educational efforts in manufacturing, and • Development of mechanisms for effective translation of research into practice in the manufacturing sector. The NORA sector council for transportation, warehousing and utilities (TWU) closed comments on its draft agenda in January 2018 and while the final version has not yet been released, the draft OSHA The cross-sector council on traumatic injury prevention may yield results that can greatly benefit the pallet and logistics industries… the council's key objectives in the draft included: prevention of work-related motor vehicle crashes and injuries; reduction of falls; reduction of workplace violence; prevention of injuries related to human-machine interactions; promotion of safety in non-standard work arrangements (such as temporary workers, prison labor etc.).
