16 PalletCentral • July-August 2018 palletcentral.com states that you need to operate your facility in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. If they have reason to believe that you are not complying with local code, that could be a reason they would deny a claim for loss. This code is for outdoor areas, why are indoor parts of my facility included in the code? Koffel: Indoor areas are covered by other sections of the code. The indoors operations are all part of the risk on the site. They are either the exposure risk or the risk that the fire may start inside and spread to the outside storage. Woodworking areas are covered by other provisions of the fire code. Gething: This is a performance-based standard. We are looking at a holistic approach to fire safety and going back to the core principal of fire safety at the facilities. So yes, while the codes apply specifically to outdoor storage, fire safety starts really when you walk into the door of your facility. The topography site plans include things like draining and downstream run off, what are your thoughts on that? Koffel: We don't require you to identify topography or landscaping, or other issues. Some sites have well grown trees all around the property line, which could be an avenue that fire could spread. This is where your local fire inspector is a valuable resource to you. Topography is an issue to the extent that you have the ability to make a new lot as to where you locate the buildings in comparison to where you locate the outside storage. That can all be taken into account for creating new lot/site plans. At this point, we do not require that topography or landscape be identified on the site plan.
