In December 2018, the United Nations General Assembly declared 2020 as the International Year of Plant Health (IYPH). The year is a once in a lifetime opportunity to raise global awareness on how protecting plant health can help end hunger, reduce poverty, protect the environment, and boost economic development. As a member of IFQRG, the NWPCA works with conservation groups and researchers focused on the health of forests to promote plant health. The International Forestry Quarantine Research Group (IFQRG) supports the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) community by addressing critical forestry quarantine issues for the global plant protection community through scientific analysis, discussion and collaborative research. In 2020 IFQRG is working with the IPPC on heat treatment guidance for developing countries to treat wood packaging material according to ISPM 15 standards. The use of properly applied heat treatment will limit the spread of invasive pests and protect plant resources. IFQRG Scientists, regulators and industry experts work together to solve global forest plant health problems.
