28 PalletCentral • November-December 2021 palletcentral.com Productora del Tarimas del Sur (Protsur) Written by Malik García O ver the last 10 years, we have seen how companies have increased automation for packaging and cargo handling processes. Even though the 40x48 pallet is the most widely used, it has not been possible to return to this standard. For Protsur this has been a market opportunity to adapt to the specific needs of each client, not only in terms of dimension, but for incorporating new wood species as well, such as the use of Gmelina, Eucalyptus and even Oak. Until two years ago, the pallet industry [in Mexico] was very competitive, the opportunity to design pallet models that consumed less timber was ending, as the limit of optimization of materials had already been reached. In regard to recycling pallets, it has long ceased to be a good opportunity for growth, firstly because recycling depends on the manufacturers of new ones, and secondly because the recycling industry business sector [in Mexico] consists of many small informal businesses, all of which compete for used pallets, their raw material. In the coming years, we see the use of compressed blocks made from waste wood chips as the next possible niche market in Mexico. e development of this new sector of the market is a result of lumber price increases, a situation triggered by a new order imposed by shipping companies, which is also affecting imported timber. Speaking of domestic lumber, we know that there is not enough timber to meet the demand of the pallet market and prices have also increased, taking advantage of the global wood market. us, Protsur's challenge is to take advantage of natural resources, which are increasing scarce.
