His first business was manufacturing dip tanks, which continues today as Eagle Dip Tanks. In 1998 Kiln-Direct.com was launched, and today reports over 1,000 kilns sold and distributed in over 40 countries. Kiln-Direct.com is in the small town of Burgaw, North Carolina but is one of the largest suppliers of pallet heat-treating systems. Shortly after launching the business, Niels was joined by his family from Denmark, and today the company is led by Niels and his father, Valde, while his mother, Helle, handles the accounting. As a young man, Niels worked for Valde, operating a family-owned sawmill in Denmark. Valde developed his kilns before selling the sawmill but continued manufacturing dry kilns for his European customers. Today Kiln-Direct.com's products include lumber and firewood kilns. Most of their business is evenly split between pallet heat treaters and dry kilns for firewood producers, with the remainder in lumber dry kilns and dip tanks. As the company approaches 30 years in business, they take great pride in providing service support for their current customers. Much of their focus is on updating software and systems to enable the older kilns to keep up with new technology, improving performance and efficiency. eir warehouse in Burgaw also keeps a strong inventory of spare parts for those older kilns and operates a busy road service team to meet their customers in the field. While service and sustainability of current customers are their primary focus, they work to stay ahead of the pallet industry needs in the future. For example, they are developing systems to utilize biomass as a fuel alternative. Other improvements and changes have included building 100% stainless steel structures and using touchscreen technology. One of the main selling points for Kiln-Direct. com is the ease of start-up for a new customer. With a concrete base prepared and access to gas and electricity, the new kiln can be plugged in and begin operating shortly after installation. As in the beginning, Kiln-Direct.com is a family business, and supporting its 50+ team members and families is of great importance. e company is working continuously to find ways to stay strong and resilient during tough times while enjoying healthy business during the good times. ey know from many years of experience the best way to achieve that goal is by supporting the family businesses in the wooden pallet industry. www.kiln-direct.com
