palletcentral.com PalletCentral • November-December 2015 15 s we reflect on this past year, it has been one of the busiest for The Pallet Foundation. The Foundation supports the wood packaging industry in three core areas: education, research, and environmental messaging, and in 2015, has taken great strides in each area. Education: Most recently, the foundation committed to the funding of a full-time graduate student at Virginia Tech to work on wood packaging research. In total, NWPCA and The Pallet Foundation have committed nearly $200,000 to Virginia Tech over the next two years! Research: The Foundation has also consistently supported testing, data collection and analysis for the Pallet Design System™ and other related research projects. The Virginia Tech graduate student will also be responsible for additional contract testing that will occur with the university through 2015 and 2016 to advance PDS (see related article "Perfect Partnership" on page 38). Environmental Messaging: Wood is good might be common sense for us, but for industries consuming pallets, those groups are increasing asking for more. What are their questions; what limits their use of wood? The Pallet Foundation supports the branding and marketing of Nature's Packaging, a joint initiative with the Canadian Wood Pallet & Container Association and Western Pallet Association, to address those challenging questions. Beginning with unique branding and a separate website (early 2016), Nature's Packaging will be able to dive into other areas, such as Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations, for wood pallets and wood packaging. In closing out 2015, we want to thank contributors to the foundation and those who participate in the auction at the NWPCA Annual Leadership Conference which help fund these initiatives. We also want to thank The Pallet Foundation Trustees for their leadership and guidance.
