e have an endless supply of books,
articles, stories and even videos that
discuss leadership and management
available at our fingertips. It's a
common goal we almost all strive for
– to be a better leader.
At the recent NWPCA Annual
Leadership Conference, Mike
Abrashoff shared some leadership
tips from his years as the
commanding officer of the USS Benfold, a US Navy destroyer.
With a crew of 315 sailors, Abrashoff took command of a poorly
performing ship with low morale. A year later, he was able to
transform the ship by applying strategic leadership techniques, and
turn it into the best ship in the Navy.
The transformation began immediately when Abrashoff assumed
command. As the crew cheered while the outgoing commanding
officer disembarked the ship for the last time, he knew immediately
that things had to change. He shared, "I'd never seen such a blatant
display of disrespect by a crew for its outgoing captain. They were
thrilled to see him leave." This was the signal that things on board
had to be altered, and he'd have to modify his leadership style.
