5 SAFETY SUPERVISOR'S GUIDE NWPCA Fire Code Compliance Manual for Outdoor Storage of Wood Pallets | Version 1.0 (December 2017) 2.2 Site Plan The Site Plan shall include the following: (1) Lot lines (2) Utilities (3) Size, location, and type of construction of the building (4) Presence of fire protection systems (5) Water supply sources for fire-fighting purposes (6) Locations of hazardous material storage areas (7) Locations of pallet storage (8) Equipment protected with a dust collection system (9) Fire department access routes (10) Designated smoking areas (11) Locations of fire alarm control panels See Appendix A.2.2 for Explanatory Material on the components listed above. See Section 3.1 for an example of a site plan. 2.3 Fire Prevention Plan A fire prevention plan has four main components: (1) Frequency of walk-through inspections to verify compliance with the fire prevention plan (2) Hot work permit process (3) Preventive maintenance program for equipment associated with the pallet activities (4) Inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection systems 2.3.1 Walk Through Inspections The objective of the walk-through inspection is to visually observe the subject property, gather information, and note items of interest pertaining to the fire prevention practices on the property. The scheduled frequency of walk-through inspections should be determined based on the hazards presented by certain areas or occupancies. A level of risk should be determined for each separated area within a site. Higher risk areas should receive more frequent inspections. Once a schedule is determined, it should not be deviated from except for good reason. Some items to consider during walk-through inspections: Storage heights, and areas of wood pallet storage Storage areas and quantities of flammable liquids Hot work areas are confined to their designated area Condition and location of exit signs
