6 SAFETY SUPERVISOR'S GUIDE NWPCA Fire Code Compliance Manual for Outdoor Storage of Wood Pallets | Version 1.0 (December 2017) Condition of fire alarm system components Location and condition of portable fire extinguishers Physical damage to sprinkler system piping or components Condition of industrial machinery and equipment Dust accumulation , dust containment, and condition of dust removal systems 2.3.2 Hot Work Permit Process Hot work processes shall apply to the following Welding and allied processes Heat treating of metal objects Grinding Thawing pipe Powder-driven fasteners Hot riveting Similar applications producing or using a spark, flame, or heat All hot work processes done on premises should be reviewed and documented. Hot work areas should be clearly marked and identified with appropriate signage. See Appendix A.2.3.1 for more detail on hot work. 2.3.3 Preventative Maintenance Program for Equipment A routine maintenance program shall be developed to prevent equipment or machinery malfunctions and to further reduce the fire risk from potential identified hazards. Proper preventative maintenance of a facility begins and ends with good housekeeping and general cleanliness practices, performed routinely between and after shifts and at the end of the day. When done thoroughly and consistently, these practices will reduce significantly the likelihood of a fire outbreak at a facility. They will also help to prevent the spread of a fire so that it may be contained to the area of ignition, thereby reducing initial damage and providing fire suppression systems and first responders a better opportunity to extinguish the fire. These activities may include but are not limited to: Cleaning sawdust and any other debris around machinery and equipment Removing material from collection containers and trash cans Sweeping floors Storing lumber and pallets in neat, well stacked arrays Removing debris from the pallet storage area, areas of egress, and traffic areas The fire protection systems and equipment that is provided should also be inspected, tested, and maintained. See Appendix A.2.3.3 for standards relating to these systems. These systems may include but are not limited to:
