Abrams, Esq., CMSP WORKERS SAFELY All workers, including those working remotely, must be protected against recognized hazards that could harm them. T he COVID-19 pandemic brought many changes to American workplaces, notably a retreat to the home work environment or other remote locations in lieu of reporting to "the office" as was the routine practice. Of course, only a select segment of workers had this "remote" work option and most of those were at a senior management level, or performed administrative functions including purchasing, payroll, legal, and HR. Many other workers were "essential" and had to perform their tasks in a hands-on manner at the worksite. ese include workers involved in manufacturing, transportation, warehousing, logistics, and construction. is created a chasm in terms of employer obligations for overseeing worker safety in their designated work environment … or did it? It's a "yes and no" answer. When OSHA issued its now-rescinded Emergency Temporary Standard mandating either vaccines or weekly testing of employees of large employers, it exempted home workers from those provisions and/or protections. ere also would not be likely cases of OSHA MANAGING REMOTE iStockphoto.com/Ridofranz iStockphoto.com/Daisy-Daisy
