INSIDE NWPCA W ith 2017 ending, let's take this space to reflect upon the many accomplishments that NWPCA has achieved this year. The Year in Review: The State of the Association – Tough as Nails! • FIRE CODE: NWPCA's work with consultants on fire codes and safety concerns achieved remarkable success in 2017, and will expand in 2018. There was a series of OSHA webinars, a fire code compliance resource manual, and fire code meetings and trainings. For the first time, we hosted a full day "Year of Safety" meeting on August 3rd in Chicago, Illinois. Remember to request your free NWPCA Fire Code Compliance Manual from PalletCentral.com/ComplianceManual. • CONGRESS/FEDERAL: On June 19-21, NWPCA held its Congressional Fly-in with record registration for the event. With a new Congress and business friendly administration, we took the opportunity to make real progress in advancing our industry's priorities. Our visits resulted in the creation of a formal working group between the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and NWPCA on ISPM-15. The partnership will strengthen the program and further prevent harmful invasive plant pests from entering the country while protecting our forests. • MILL TOURS: NWPCA members invited Members of Congress to visit their facilities in their home towns. NWPCA's Chairman, Shane Thompson, hosted U.S. Representative David Young at their WestWind Logistics facilities in Des Moines, Iowa. Congressman Young serves on the House Committee on Appropriations. • AWARDS: This year, NWPCA awarded its "Champion of the Wooden Pallet and Container Industry" plaque to Congressman Glenn "GT" Thompson of Pennsylvania's 5th District and Congressman Bradley Byrne of Alabama's 1st District. Both Congressmen visited member facilities and have been champions of the industry. • STATE ADVOCACY: Our work isn't restricted to Washington, DC, but extends across the country. NWPCA was in Albany, New York this year combatting attempts to ban wooden pallets and containers in international trade. This included meetings with the New York Invasive Species Council and Committee, The Nature Conservancy, and Empire State Forest Products Association. • PALLET-PAC: NWPCA members decided to take the association to the next level of government affairs and advocacy. The NWPCA Government Affairs Committee and Board of Directors approved moving forward with creating a Political Action Committee (PAC). The PAC will represent the pallet industry's interest by contributing campaign funds to those members of Congress who support and advocate on behalf of our industry. Funds for the PAC, by law, do not come from corporate or dues dollars; they are completely voluntary personal contributions. We thank you for your financial support, it is going to a worthy cause – protecting the wooden pallet and container industry, and your continued economic success. We are working for you and these are just highlights of all our activities on your behalf. NWPCA and its members are "Tough as Nails."
